I was born in 1976, America’s bicentennial year.
Now, as I turn 50 and America approaches its 250th anniversary, this piece became more personal than I expected.
This piece wasn’t easy to make — and I think that’s the point.
It went downhill fast. It was a slog. Then something beautiful would emerge, that familiar rush would hit, and everything would fall apart again.
I kept adding, removing, rebuilding, second-guessing, correcting, and starting over.
Eventually, I reached a moment when I had to stop chasing perfection and let the piece become what it was becoming.
Then I realized that is the message.
I’m a work in progress.
America is too.
